About St. Luke’s Society for Nursing Research
St. Luke’s Society for Nursing Research (SLNR) was established in April 1996 as a forum for presenting a wide range of scholarly research without limiting research fields, at a time when academic societies were being founded according to specialized areas within nursing science.
“St. Luke’s” was chosen as the title of the society to symbolize two key principles: first, that the founder of St. Luke’s International Hospital and St. Luke's International University, Dr. Rudolf Bolling Teusler devoted great effort to the education and development of nursing professionals; and second, that he promoted research aimed at improving nursing practice through close collaboration between practitioners and researchers. This name does not in any way signify that the society is intended only for graduates of St. Luke's International University.
Today, in addition to nursing researchers such as those holding master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing, an increasing number of nursing professionals engaged in advanced practice such as Certified Nurse Specialists (CNS) and Certified Nurses (CN) being produced and active in the field.
The purpose of this society is “to promote academic development and exchange among members, thereby contributing to the improvement of nursing practice and the advancement of nursing science (Article 4 of the Bylaws).” Through research in nursing science grounded in practice, the society aims to contribute to the enhancement of nursing practice. As an academic organization, SLNR is registered as a Cooperative Academic Society of the Science Council of Japan.
We believe that the role expected of this society is to support SLNR members in expanding their activities, deepening their knowledge and skills, and addressing improvements in patients’ quality of life (QOL) from new perspectives. This is achieved by providing opportunities for nursing professionals to present the outcomes of their daily activities, refine their own research and practical skills, and build researchers networks.
In addition, SLNR members are able to use St. Luke's International University Library (limited to associate on-campus users only).
We welcome individuals who wish to contribute to improving the quality of nursing services in clinical settings where nursing care is provided, and who seek a place to engage in mutual learning and professional development toward the advancement of nursing practice. We look forward to your membership in this society.
